Christian Williams, Editor in Chief
The journalistic equivalent of a Swiss Army knife, Editor in Chief Christian Williams has experience doing just about everything in print journalism over the last 12 years. Since finishing a media relations internship with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2000, Christian has been a general assignment reporter, crime reporter, sports editor, features editor, photographer, arts & entertainment editor, columnist, and managing editor for four different weekly, bi-weekly and daily newspapers between Chicago and Milwaukee.
He fell in love with the copy editor of a competing Milwaukee newspaper in 2005, and soon followed her to her home state of Kansas. They planted roots in the small but progressive college town of Lawrence, and in 2007, Christian joined nearby Ogden Publications as assistant editor of Gas Engine Magazine – a hobby magazine for collectors of antique farm engines. He helped older readers ease into new media by developing new ways for them to follow their favorite hobby through the Internet, which led to an opportunity to become online editor of Motorcycle Classics – another of Ogden’s publications. Christian was just about to buy a motorcycle when he was offered the editorship of Utne Reader. Now, to the collective relief of his family, he’s just buying a lot of bookshelves.
In his spare time, Christian has been known to dabble in poetry, playwriting and songwriting. Regarding the latter, he has self-released six albums of original folk music inspired by the nature and history of the American prairie.
Christian relishes the chance to continue the conversation Eric Utne sparked with the first issue of Utne Reader on a variety of topics including politics, food, culture, the arts and spirituality.
