Alt Wire news feed accompanies cleaner, more user-friendly site layout

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (July 5, 2011) – Utne Reader today launched Utne Reader Alt Wire, an online magazine curated from social media through a detailed analysis of 3,000 “influencers” on the real-time Web. Utne Reader becomes the first magazine to use this technology to engage thought leaders in curating relevant subject matter.

Utne Reader Alt Wire tracks what online influencers discuss in the realm of media, the environment, mind and body, arts and culture, politics, and science and technology. Utne Reader’s staff selected the top 20 influencers in each category, some of whom the print magazine had previously named as visionaries. In turn, users can track those influencers’ networks and trending conversations.

The online magazine displays article summaries with photos based on a relevance score in its category. Each article shows how many – and which – influencers cited it. Users can then read the full article with another click.

“Now our readers get all the engaging Utne Reader content — both from the print magazine and our blogs — along with news from the real-time Web via Alt Wire,” Editor in Chief David Schimke says.

Alt Wire is based on the R88R (“radiater”) software platform provided by Sociative Inc.
