UTNE READER NAMES TIM DECHRISTOPHER A VISIONARY
Environmental activist makes national magazine’s list of “25 People Who Are Changing the World”
SALT LAKE CITY (Oct. 12, 2011) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, names Tim DeChristopher as a visionary who is making the world a better place. He is among 25 people the magazine highlights in its November-December issue, on newsstands Oct. 20.
To take a stand against fossil fuels and environmental destruction, climate activist DeChristopher successfully bid $1.8 million on oil and gas drilling leases near Arches National Park, even though he didn’t have the money to buy the land. DeChristopher was sentenced this summer to two years in prison for his act, which he explained in a passionate sentencing statement that has become lore among green activists.
“Each year, Utne Reader’s staff selects 25 visionaries, people who have that extra twist of imagination, determination and energy … People who don’t just concoct great ideas but also act on them and lay their souls on the line for change,” says David Schimke, Utne Reader’s editor in chief.
Online extras for each visionary will be available Oct. 17 at Utne.com/Visionaries.
