UTNE READER NAMES MEDIA AWARDS NOMINEES
Name change reflects the decision to include more websites for recognition

 2013 Utne Media Awards Nominees

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 16, 2013) — Utne Reader today names the nominees for its 23rd Utne Media Awards. Winners will be revealed May 20 at the MPA-Association of Magazine Media’s Independent Magazine Media Conference in New Orleans.

The Utne Media Awards, formerly known as the Utne Independent Press Awards, recognize the distinctiveness and vitality of alternative media. Nominees in nine categories represent the best in independent political, social/cultural, arts, environmental, international, body/spirit, and science/technical coverage as well as best writing and general excellence.

To recognize the changing media landscape, Utne widened the scope of this year’s awards to include more websites than in previous years. Editor in Chief Christian Williams notes that it’s important to consider all means of communication in addition to print.

“While we still love and will always celebrate the printed word, we’d be remiss not to recognize the democratization of information made possible by the Internet,” Williams says.

Utne Reader’s editors select nominees through an extensive reading process and yearlong examination, rather than via a competition with entry forms and fees. This way, the magazine honors the efforts of smaller, sometimes overlooked outlets that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives. All elements, from graphics to coverage, are taken into consideration when selecting the nominees and eventually the winners.

The nominees appear in the May-June issue, on sale today, and online at Utne.com. Winners will be published in the July-August issue.

The nominees are:
General Excellence Adbusters, Orion, Tomorrow Magazine, Yes!
