18 of today's most perceptive writers and thinkers share with Lapis books that may help to guide our thinking as we enter the twenty-first century. In the reading list are books on everything from spirituality to guns. Ptolemy Tompkins, author of Paradise Fever, suggests Saving the Appearances by Owen Barfield, for it 'paints a picture of the universe as an arena for the evolution of human consciousness more convincingly than any other book I know.' Whereas Satish Kumar, editor of Resurgence magazine, discusses the book Small is Beautiful by E.F. Schumacher. '[It] reminds the reader of the value and profoundness of small, simple, local and non-violent way of being. The book brings economics and ethics together, particularly the chapter on Buddhist economics.' Both Marion Woodman and David Korten included The Spell of the Sensuous in their required reading. Author and thinker, Terry Tempest Williams picked the titles A Sand County Almanac and The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson. Robert Bly chose Revolt of the Masses and Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being. Bill McKibben suggests Wendell Berry's The Gift of Good Landby.
