The town of Hammerfest, Norway, has become the first municipality in the world to generate electricity from the ocean tides, according to Yes! (Spring 2003). The Arctic coastal town has installed a 220-ton turbine on the ocean floor that will generate an estimated 300 kilowatts of electricity year-round, enough to power 1,000 homes.
