The Enemy Within, Neve Gordon, In These Times
Israel's political left has been trying to mount opposition to the conflict with Palestine, but has not managed to challenge its country's war spirit, reports Neve Gordon in the progressive newsmagazine In These Times. During the past year, peace activists were 'warned' about their activities by the Israeli secret service, had e-mails intercepted, and had areas where protesters gather declared 'closed military zones.' Weekly protests in front of the prime minister's house and efforts to distribute food to Palestinian villages have continued, but with little media coverage. The Israeli media have adopted the nationalistic refrain of war and conformed to the official line. 'By rendering the peace camp invisible to the public at large,' Gordon writes, 'the Israeli media help make it powerless.'
