Rebecca Onie: Home Health Advocate

Utne Reader visionary

| November-December 2010

MacArthur “genius award” winner Onie runs Project HEALTH, which enlists college students, many pre-med, as volunteer social workers who connect low-income people to housing, heating assistance, and other nonmedical resources vital to health.

Onie founded Project HEALTH during her sophomore year in college. While many students are still trying to figure out their major, Onie was focused enough to call Dr. Barry Zuckerman and tell him that his vision for what was then Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center) was missing a key element. That key element eventually turned into Project HEALTH.
