• INVISIBLE MONSTERS REMIX

CLEARANCE ITEM. PREVIOUS RETAIL PRICE WAS $25.95 AVAILABLE ONLY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!

For the first time in hardcover, an expanded, radically refashioned "director's cut" of a favorite Chuck Palahniuk novel.

Injected with new material and special design elements, Invisible Monsters Remix fulfills Chuck Palahniuk’s original vision for his 1999 novel, turning a daring satire on beauty and the fashion industry into an even more wildly unique reading experience. Palahniuk’s fashion-model protagonist has it all—boyfriend, career, loyal best friend—until an accident destroys her face, her ability to speak, and her self-esteem. Enter Brandy Alexander, Queen Supreme, one operation away from becoming a bona-fide woman. Laced in are new chapters of memoir and further scenes with the book’s characters. Readers will jump between chapters, reread the book to understand the dissolve between fiction and fact, and decipher the playful book design, embarking on a ride they’ll never forget.

  • MOTHER EARTH NEWS ARCHIVE 1970-2017: CLASSIC USB DRIVE

In 2003, we introduced an archive of all Mother Earth News' issues from the 1970s on CD-ROM, presenting a new way of accessing past issues of the magazine in a digital environment. Thousands of readers responded to the notion of being able to sift through our first decade at the click of a mouse, and to the ability to search for what specifically interested them.

Following that success, we continued to expand the archive to cover more of the magazine's past issues on disc. Also available is the Multiplatform Edition, which makes the magazine content available not just on desktop and laptop computers, but also via smartphones and the multitude of portable reading devices that have become so ubiquitous. Now, we are pleased to reintroduce the classic version of the archive, for the first time with enhanced search functionality across Mother's entire 48-year history. With this version of the archive, you can search for articles about earth-sheltered homes, cheap solar power, organic gardening techniques, raising chickens, beekeeping, do-it-yourself projects and much more.

Mother Earth News has also published hundreds of healthy, down-to-earth recipes, and the archive includes all the delicious directions we've published in the magazine. From strawberry jam and homemade jerky to hummus and morel mushroom quiche, you'll find something to satisfy every appetite.

Find almost every story, tip and technique published in the magazine and online from 1970-2017 … more than 21,000 articles!

Confused about the difference between our two archive products? These are the key distinctions:

    • The Multiplatform Edition contains files for each year of the magazine in a format that can be transferred for viewing and searching on multiple devices. The content can only be viewed and searched year by year.
    • The Classic Edition provides a browser-based interface for accessing the archive on your desktop computer or laptop. You can do advanced searches and view content from the entire 48-year archive, all at once!

    TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The archive content is now available on USB flash drives. Increasingly, computers and laptops are sold without DVD drives but with USB ports. With the archive available on a USB flash drive, you can upload and access Mother Earth News articles without needing an external DVD drive. Note: Some tablets and mobile devices are equipped with USB ports, allowing access to archive content without having to first upload the flash drive's content to a computer.

The Classic Archive Edition on USB may also be used on tablets equipped with USB ports (Android or Windows tablets). At least 1.6 GB of storage space is recommended for it to run the most efficiently on these devices.

Please Note: We recommend using the Firefox Web browser to view this USB. You can download Firefox here.

CLEARANCE ITEM. PREVIOUS RETAIL PRICE WAS $16.95. AVAILABLE ONLY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!

Bigger has turned out not to be better. Servicing the global economy has exacted a heavy toll in the erosion of our communities and the destruction of our environment. Increasingly, we are coming to realize that the way forward looks a lot like the way back — back to strong local economies, back to resilient, tight-knit communities, back to the land and work that is real.

As we chart our course through these uncertain times, we are hungry for inspiration. Robert Swann was a self-taught economist, a tireless champion of decentralism, and the father of the relocalization movement. A conscientious war resistor imprisoned for his beliefs, Swann engaged in lifelong nonviolent direct action against war, racism and economic inequity. His legacy is a vision of a life-affirming, alternative economy of peace founded on innovations in land and monetary reform.

Swann's story is also the untold history of decentralism in the United States. He associated with a constellation of vital, intelligent independent authors and activists, and ultimately co-founded the Schumacher Society based on the philosophies of Small Is Beautiful author E. F. Schumacher.

Swann forged tools to build productive, resilient local and regional economies. Now as global industrial civilization flails in the throes of ecological and economic crisis, Swann's working innovations are at the ready to help neighborhoods, local entrepreneurs, and willing communities to rebuild at appropriate scales.

  • PLAN C

CLEARANCE ITEM. PREVIOUS RETAIL PRICE WAS $19.95. AVAILABLE ONLY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!

Concerns over climate change and energy depletion are increasing exponentially. Mainstream solutions still assume a panacea that will cure our climate ills without requiring any serious modification to our way of life.

Plan C explores the risks inherent in trying to continue our energy-intensive lifestyle. Using dirtier fossil fuels (Plan A) or switching to renewable energy sources (Plan B) allows people to remain complacent in the face of a potential global catastrophe. Dramatic lifestyle change is the only way to begin to create a sustainable, equitable world. The converging crises of Peak Oil, Climate Change and increasing inequity are presented in a clear, concise manner, as are the twin solutions of community (where cooperation replaces competition) and curtailment (deliberately reducing consumption of consumer goods).

Plan C shows how each person's individual choices can dramatically reduce CO2 emissions. It offers specific strategies in the areas of food, transportation and housing. One chapter analyzes the decimation of the Cuban economy when the USSR stopped oil exports in 1990 and provides an inspiring vision for a low energy way of living.

Plan C is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in living a lower-energy, saner and sustainable lifestyle.

  • POWER TRIP

CLEARANCE ITEM. PREVIOUS RETAIL PRICE WAS $25.99. AVAILABLE ONLY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!

After covering the environment and energy beat for more than a decade, columnist Amanda Little decided that the only way to fully understand America’s energy crisis was to travel into the heart of it. So she embarked on a daring, cross-country power trip to the most extreme and exciting frontiers of our energy landscape.

In Power Trip, we accompany her to a deep-sea oil rig, the cornfields of Kansas, the catacombs of the Pentagon, the Talladega Superspeedway, and inside New York City’s electrical grid. We visit laboratories creating the innovations that will carry us into a clean-energy future. Little also travels back through history to investigate how America developed its unrivaled appetite for fossil fuels. In vivid, fast-paced prose, she illustrates how the same American ingenuity that got us into this mess can get us out of it too.

  • POWERING THE FUTURE

In Powering the Future, Nobel laureate Robert B. Laughlin transports us two centuries into the future, when we've ceased to use carbon from the ground-either because humans have banned carbon burning or because fuel has simply run out. Boldly, Laughlin predicts no earth-shattering transformations will have taken place. Six generations from now, there will still be soccer moms, shopping malls, and business trips. Firesides will still be snug and warm.

How will we do it? Not by discovering a magic bullet to slay our energy problems, but through a slew of fascinating technologies, drawing on wind, water and fire. Powering the Future is an objective yet optimistic tour through alternative fuel sources, set in a world where we've burned every last drop of petroleum and every last shovelful of coal.
