Utne Reader Names 22nd Annual Independent Press Awards Nominees
This year’s contenders demonstrate in-depth reporting and excellent storytelling in alternative media
MINNEAPOLIS (April 12, 2011) — Utne Reader, the best of the alternative press, today names the nominees for its 22nd annualUtneIndependent Press Awards. The winners will be revealed May 18 at the MPA-Association of Magazine Media’s Independent Magazine Media Conference in San Francisco.
The Utne Independent Press Awards recognize the distinctiveness and vitality of alternative and independent publishing. Nominees in nine categories represent the best in independent political, social/cultural, arts, environmental, international, body/spirit, and science/technology coverage as well as best writing and general excellence.
Editor in Chief David Schimke believes that independent journalists continue to turn out high-quality original work, despite economic challenges and the ever-changing media landscape.
“Our awards — like every issue of Utne Reader — are designed to celebrate those independent and alternative periodicals that give readers a fresh take on their world,” Schimke says. “And that’s often accomplished by focusing on people, places, and ideas that are either misrepresented or ignored by big media.”
Utne Reader‘s editors select nominee publications through an extensive reading process and yearlong examination, rather than via a competition with entry forms and fees. This way, the magazine honors the efforts of smaller, sometimes overlooked publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives. All elements, from covers to coverage, are taken into consideration when selecting the nominees and eventually the winners.
The nominees appear in the May-June issue, which is on newsstands April 19, and online at Utne.com. Winners will be featured in the July-August 2011 issue.
