Lopez is the rare western writer who is appreciated in New York literary circles and loved at home. His nonfiction Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape is a naturalist‘s meditation on landscape and sight; and his fiction, Field Notes: The Grace Note of the Canyon Wren and Crow and Weasel, crosses into the territory where mind and landscape become one. He has received an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
