Tobias Wong, a Canadian artist and designer whose star was rising fast, died last year at the age of 35–“or, more specifically, 13,138 days,” reports the design blog Colossal (May 24, 2011). As a tribute, Wong’s friend Frederick McSwain made a portrait of Wong using exactly that number of dice, arranged on the floor without adhesive. Die was shown at Gallery R’Pure in New York City in May. “The idea of a die was appropriate,” McSwain tells Colossal, because it represents “the randomness of life.”
