Gomes attended a course in cinematography at the Institute of Cuban Art in Havana under the legendary Santiago Alvarez. In 1988 Gomes released Mortu Nega, the first full-length film produced in Guinea-Bissau. It is a remarkable tale of love during the country’s struggle for independence.
