Adopt-a-Minefield

Taking a cue from America’s ubiquitous voluntary highway cleanup program, the United Nations and a coalition of peace and human rights groups have formed a grassroots program to support landmine disarming efforts worldwide. More than $2.5 million has already been raised to “adopt” 60 minefields, according to the alternative news service AlterNet (Jan. 25, 2001). For more information, check out www.landmines.org.
