Baywatch, Egypt

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water,
there?s Action in Hurghada?an Egyptian television series
inspired by America?s Baywatch. Youssef Mansour?the show?s
Hasselhoff-esque star and producer?will unite with Hollywood
powerbrokers to cast and distribute the series, reports Anna
Shepard of Cairo Times. Sylvester Stallone is anticipated
to attend this September?s ?castings-cum-beauty contest? at the Red
Sea resort of El Houna. While Mansour is excited by the show?s
potential to stimulate Egypt?s economy and boost its public
profile, many Egyptians are outraged by the overt sexuality of the
project. ?Even in the West, Baywatch is looked down upon
as a [series with] no artistic or cultural value,? notes Egyptian
feminist and activist Sahar Al Mougy. Producers expect to hire
Lebanese and Syrian actresses, as they are ?renowned for their more
liberal attitudes.?
