The world’s first commercial wave power station, which harnesses the power of the ocean to generate electricity, has opened on the Scottish island of Islay, reports Earth Island Journal (Summer 2001). The World Energy Council estimates that the seas might eventually produce enough power to meet double the world’s current energy demands.
