The survival of gray whales has influenced “myriad human cultural conflicts,” according to the Shades of Gray Series, published by the New Times network of alternative weeklies. “Gray Whales are leading tourists, conservationalists, and business operators on a rocky voyage toward economic and environmental salvation,” writes Michael Lacey. The series also celebrates the recovery of the Eastern North Pacific gray whale from the brink of extinction as “the single greatest turnaround of a marine mammal population.”
