Fasting for Health and Spirituality — and
the Dreaded E-word
, D.B. Cooley, Street
Miami

Although fasting has been long-used in spiritual quests and health
regimens, the lure of food can be so strong that it becomes the
faster’s undoing. That’s what writer D.B. Cooley of Street
Miami
finds out when he tries a juice fast to improve a
sinus condition. At the beginning of his fast, Cooley fantasizes
about owning the key to a Dunkin’ Donuts and dreams of a VW
bug-sized roasted turkey. It turns out getting started is the
biggest hurdle for Cooley who, after four days with no food,
emerges from his fast with a clear mind and body. ‘My skin is soft
and supple, my breath no longer foul, my body limber,’ he says.
‘And what’s more, my sinuses are as clean and mucus-free as my
kitchen faucet.’
