Kansas Teens to Continue Publishing
Underground Paper, Aarika Mack, Freedom Forum
Online
Two Kansas high schoolers have been prohibited
from attending classes after publishing a newspaper mocking the
school’s official paper. Lee Dunfield and Brad Quellhorst
distributed 200 copies of the first issue of The Low
Budget, a spoof of Lawrence High School’s official The
Budget, on August 31 with articles like ‘Veteran’s Park Set
on Fire to Discourage Smoking,’ ‘Pope Apologizes for All 2000
Years of Christian Persecution,’ and ‘NYC Police Arrest Man for
Being Black.’ The paper is now online, where it is not subjected
to the high school’s policy of prior view and approval before
distribution (or any real rules at all), and the kids don’t
intend to stop publishing. — Amanda
