Niggers, Old And New, Keith A. Owens, Metro Times
Since September 11, Arab Americans have become victims of hate crimes, abuse, and spontaneous “interviews” with law enforcement officials, temporarily replacing African Americans as society’s most beleaguered minority. But Keith Owens, a black journalist writing for Baltimore Metro Times online, suggests that blacks should not feel relieved. “If the Arabs are the new niggers, then are we crazy enough to believe that America is now a better place to live for the ‘former niggers’?” he writes. “And who will the next niggers be?” Owens’ candid account of being black in America provides a valuable perspective on the current state of racial prejudice in our society.
