Grassroots political organizing has gone the way of faux sod,
writes Jules Agee in a concerned letter to tech writer Declan
McCullagh?s Web site Politechbot.com. ?It looks like the
Bush administration is astroturfing, trying to artificially create
the appearance of a grassroots movement supporting their policies,?
Agee writes. ?A Google search on the phrase ?demonstrating genuine
leadership? returns a number of nearly identical letters sent to
the editors of various newspapers and publications this month, each
one with the name of a different individual attached.? Upon
investigating Agee?s concern, PRWatch.org uncovered a
three-year-old ?fad? in which a Republican party Web site offers
totebags, mousepads, and coolers in exchange for letters to the
editor.
