An internationally known planner and architect, Calthorpe pioneered an approach to community development and urban design known as “the new urbanism.” The focus of his work is mixed-use master planning, creating communities that promote a sense of connectedness, encouraging people to know their neighbors, and making parks, schools, and stores accessible by foot. He is the author of The Next American Metropolis: Ecology, Community, and the American Dream.
