Italy, France, and Monaco have joined forces to create a 32,424-square-mile whale sanctuary–twice the size of Switzerland–in the northeastern Mediterranean. As Environment magazine (Jan.-Feb. 2000) notes, the sanctuary is the first of its kind in the international waters of the Northern Hemisphere. The three countries will coordinate monitoring and pollution-control efforts in the area, fund research programs, and promote public awareness.
