In an intriguing test of psychographic marketing, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched an ad campaign in the April issue of Prison Legal News exhorting inmates to write letters supporting its campaign to free circus elephants and their four-legged colleagues under the big top; the organization believes the animals are abused. “Inmates have lost their freedom,” says PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, “but they can help elephants regain theirs by speaking out against circuses.” Or maybe just refusing to go next time the Ringling Bros. are in town.
