Mernissi is one of the preeminent Koranic scholars of our time, an outspoken feminist, and author of Beyond the Veil, Islam and Democracy, and Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood, an insider‘s view of the daily restrictions of Moroccan harem life. She is presently professor of sociology at the University Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco.
