In a moment of traffic frustration back in December, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted, “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging… I am actually going to do this.”And with that tweet, The Boring Company was started.

According to their website, The Boring Company intends to “solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic” by creating “a large network of road tunnels many levels deep.” The tunnels would also likely be compatible with another one of Elon Musk’s concepts — the Hyperloop. To access the underground system, a car on ground-level would drive onto an electric sled which would then be lowered into the tunnel system. The electric sled would allow for speeds up to 125 mph, have zero-emissions, increase safety, and allow for a reduced tunnel diameter making construction quicker and cheaper.

Construction of the first tunnel began earlier this month in California.
