Mahamat Saleh Haroun
Filmmaker (Chad)
Utne Reader September / October 2007
Haroun was forced to leave his home country at the start of the 1980s because of civil war, fleeing to Cameroon and later Paris. He studied film and journalism, working as a reporter before directing his first short film in 1994. Bye Bye Africa (1999) was the first film of its kind to be produced entirely in Chad; it is 'documentary fiction,' a story about making a documentary in which he himself plays an exiled African filmmaker. His latest film is Daratt ('Dry Season').
