“I’ve been to New York / I’ve been to L.A. / I’ve been to London / [I am] Gurrumul.” In the hands of another artist, this lyric might be a boast. But aboriginal Australian singer-songwriter Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu delivers it as a searing meditation on his good fortune, a brief burst of English on an album sung mostly in the language of his Yolngu clan. Like every song on Gurrumul, it’s composed mostly of his folk-style acoustic guitar and his sonorously rich voice, which emphasizes the mellifluous vowels and trilled r’s of his native tongue.
