Since taking a spiritual sabbatical in the ’80s, saxophonist Charles Lloyd, who in person has the mannerisms of a Buddhist monk, has infused his ruminative, modern jazz with a reverence for the masters, both musical and mystical. Possessing a wholly unique tenor, the 71-year-old’s latest album finds him unequivocally assured. As he guides his acoustic quartet through a capricious set of standards, you’ll feel as though you’re adrift on a slow-rolling sea, the water’s undulations equally meditative and moving.
